This satirical parable from the age of Enlightenment is transported to the stage in an ingenious manner thanks to Leonard Bernstein’s music, which elevates the work’s complex message to the sphere of eternal truths. Voltaire’s work remains the same satirical unmasking of the private sins and public vices that can and will occur in an ordinary life. The heroes of the piece sometimes complete the stages of this adventurous journey through space and the realm of ideas at a madcap tempo, which may explain why it seems so relevant in our world. The action on the stage will take place on “islands” fashioned within the orchestra, while the surroundings will be represented by the dancers of Pécs Ballet.
Produced on Broadway by The Chelsea Theater Center of Brooklyn in conjunction with Harold Prince and Ruth Mitchell. Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe) Limited.
The performance is not recommended for audiences under the age of 16.
After earning tremendous critical and popular acclaim at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, IMA is returning to Müpa Budapest, again playing in a tent set up next to the building.
