Dance Trend '22

If we look at the future of opera and ballet performance, the Hungarian State Opera is responsible not only for discovering new composers, works, singers, conductors, and ballet artists, but also for identifying the future masters of the neoclassical trend for the contemporary dance pieces that surface today. That is why the Opera and its corps de ballet, the Hungarian National Ballet, are presenting the choreographies that made it to the finals in the classical ballet scene competition announced in the autumn of 2021 (see: page 312). Of the various available stories, contestants can perform three, maximum 20-minute long performances in front of the professional jury and the audience. Both “audiences” will award one award each after giving a brief evaluation and counting the votes. That constitutes the second half of the night. In line with Dance Trend traditions, guest choreographers and guest corps de ballet will perform their works for the audience.

Where does dance become a real expression of itself, where it can break away from expectations and formal conformity? Where is the point where the body can honestly connect with instinct? Where does the influence of the mind over intuition begin? This performance is a journey into what it means to truly live in the moment, to reflect with heightened senses and sensitivity on the world around and within us.
It seeks to explore and contrast extremes and to draw parallels between them through bodily limitations and qualitative variations. Curiosity appears as a primary creative tool.
Just as the dancer can make use of the possibility of free association, the viewer is also encouraged to initiate the same process; to create the possibility for the recipient to interpret freely, to abandon the logic of inference and to experience the primacy of senses and emotions.
